With two W’s in two exhibitions, the 16th ranked UCF Women’s Soccer team is ready to kick off regular season play. It’s finally time for the Knights to prove they’re as good as their high ranking and even higher expectations.
The UCF Women’s Soccer team, the pre-season favorite to repeat in the American Athletic Conference, revved up for its August 19th regular season opener by picking up a pair of shutouts in exhibition play, including a 3-nil win at North Florida.
Knights’ Head Coach Tiffany Roberts-Sahaydak said after the match, “Everybody played off the bench, all three goal keepers, freshman are stepping up, transfers are stepping up, so think it was another opportunity to give everyone playing time and grow as a team.”
The Knights, who lost in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament last season, are ranked 16th in the United Soccer Coaches Pre-Season Poll.
Senior Midfielder Carrie Lawrence said, “We’re ready to build upon, we have a lot of things we need to improve, we have a lot of new players, a lot of learning, I think we’re going to be pretty good. What do you think the team’s strengths are? I think attacking wise, we have a lot of good threats up top, going forward we have a good midfield and we have a pretty sturdy backline just like last year.”
Senior Goalkeeper Vera Varis, the League’s Pre-Season Goalkeeper of the Year, likes how the 2018 Knights are coming together. “Team chemistry is one of our big things and I love that we posses the ball, we have a skillful team, good players who can actually keep the ball, I’m happy about the style of play we have and we’re all on the same page.” said Vera. Varis is stingy in the net, she allowed just four goals in 2017, which was good for 3rd in the nation.
It all gets going this Sunday, August 19th with kick off between the Knights and Florida Gulf Coast at 6 pm at the UCF Soccer Complex.
